With inclusion becoming a mainstream topic across the world, and also in various quarters within India, it should come as no surprise that the next UB resident for the country comes with plenty of experience in all things inclusive and in the wide niche of sustainable development. Shombi Sharp of the United States will take over as the resident UN representative in India, which is pending the government’s approval. This representative has been chosen by the UN secretary general. And it seems to be a choice that aligns with much of India’s recent focus on sustainable development and inclusion as well.

If we are to cast a glance only on last week’s activities, we will find that India has been steadily embracing the policy of inclusion coupled with sustainable development. The example of the TVS Motor Company joining the UN Global Compact is one such piece of news that points in this direction. On the other hand, VP Naidu recently inaugurated a regional vocational training centre where he spoke about including disabled and specially challenged people in mainstream jobs for better standards in accessibility and inclusion all over the country. Further, the Hunar Haat was conducted in UP, where inclusion of all artists on the same platform was a major theme. Finally, North East Welfare activities were hailed and considered a massive success for the first time since independence due to the inclusion of this region.

Once Shombi Sharp is able to take over as the UN resident in India, we can expect to see inclusion across all development sectors including healthcare, welfare, women and children cases as well as education and sustainable development at the core of each of these areas. With 25 years dedicated to a career in these areas, Sharp seems to be the right person to spearhead UN’s policies in India.
