The National Defence Academy in Khadakvasla is the entry point into the commissioned ranks of the Indian armed forces and right from its inception, has been a male preserve. Now, for the first time in independent India, girls fresh from schools will appear in its entrance examination to be conducted by the Union Public Service Commission on November 14, guaranteeing permanent commissions to successful candidates. While ruling on the government’s objections to lifting restrictions on girls bidding to enter the NDA, a two-member Bench of the Supreme Court of India insisted on responding to “the hopes given to women to take exams in November.” The main story of our November edition captures this new paradigm for defending India. In another big story, we take a close look at continuing attempts by the Election Commission of India to link voter identification to the flawed Aadhaar database that once again has had the Supreme Court weighing in. The upcoming elections in Telangana will be a litmus test of how valid fears are expressed about the fairness and impartiality of the screening process. With the e-election system being roundly rejected by the First World and plenty of gaps in the system still to be plugged, there is justified concern about the dangers of such a step. |
