As a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, The V.O. Chidambaranar Port on Sunday contributed Rs. 18 lakh to the Thoothukudi District administration for procuring high-power pumps to drain out rainwater.

The high power pumps would be used to expedite the dewatering of waterlogged areas of Thoothukudi city and other areas on a war footing basis and restore normalcy at the earliest.

Port Trust Chairman T.K. Ramachandran handed over a cheque for Rs. 18 lakh to District collector Dr. Senthil Raj. The port has been regularly extending its support during the monsoon season by deploying its fire tenders and pumps for dewatering the flooded areas of Thoothukudi.

Chairman of VOC Port Trust, TK Ramachandran stated that the port is always ready to lend its support to the administration through its CSR initiatives for the safety and well being of the local community.

Thoothukudi received a whopping 25 cm of rain within just nine hours on Thursday, forcing weather officials to issue a red alert to the district. The incessant rains left the district reeling with an average rainfall of 9.1 cm between 6 am and 5 pm.

After completing a full round of inspection of flood-affected areas in Chennai and its neighbouring districts, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday took stock of the situation in rain-affected areas in Thoothukudi, where he also interacted with the residents and ascertained the progress of restoration works.

Earlier, he chaired a meeting at the Thoothukudi Corporation office and reviewed the progress of relief and restoration works. During the meeting, Stalin urged the need for holding special medical camps to contain water-borne diseases and an integrated scheme to prevent rainwater stagnation. He also instructed officials to clear encroachments on all water bodies.
