India’s unemployment rate has come down drastically in January 2022. According to the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the unemployment rate in the country fell to 6.57 per cent in January. This is the lowest level of unemployment in India since March 2021. It is believed that after recovering from the Omicron variant of Covid-19, there will be a further decline in unemployment in India.
While the unemployment rate in India’s urban areas stood at 8.16 percent in January, the unemployment rate in rural areas has come down to an all-time low of 5.84 percent. According to the report of the independent think tank, India’s unemployment rate stood at 7.91 per cent in December. The unemployment rate was 9.30 percent in urban areas and 7.28 percent in rural areas.
Which states have the lowest unemployment?
Telangana saw the lowest unemployment in January, while Haryana had the highest level of unemployment. The figure stood at 0.7 per cent in Telangana, followed by Gujarat (1.2 per cent), Meghalaya (1.5 per cent) and Odisha (1.8 per cent). At the same time, Haryana topped the list with an unemployment rate of 23.4 percent, followed by Rajasthan at 18.9 percent. In December 2021, CMIE estimated the total number of unemployed in the country to be about 53 million, of which a major part is women.
On unemployment figures, CMIE Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mahesh Vyas said that in December, around 35 million unemployed people were actively looking for work and of them around 80 lakh were women. He said, it is important to add 1.7 crore people, who are unemployed but are not actively looking for work.
