Every year during the summer months, water supply in Delhi gets severely impacted due to a host of reasons. This year, according to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), water supply in south and northeast Delhi will be significantly impacted due to the outbreak of algae in the Upper Ganga Canal (UGC). This canal is a key conduit for bringing raw water to Delhi, which is treated before being supplied to households.

“Due to the continued presence of algae/floating material in raw water from the Upper Ganga Canal, since the last 20 days, the production/pumping of clear water from the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant has been affected,” said DJB in a press note.

It further stated that water supply will remain affected until the availability of clean water without algae from Muradnagar.

Water from Yamuna too cannot be used to make up for the shortfall, since it’s unfit for human use due to the high presence of presence of toxins. Earlier, high concentration of ammonia in the reservoir in Wazirabad impacted the supply of clean water from the treatment plants in Wazirabad and Chandrawal.

The UGC supplies around 480 cusecs of raw water per day of which the Sonia Vihar treatment plant supplies 120 cusecs after cleaning.
