The Mahatma Gandhi NREG Scheme’s Climate Resilience Information System and Planning (CRISP-M) tool has been launched

This application will aid in the integration of climate data into GIS-based planning and the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA (MGNREGA)

Through a virtual event, Union Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Shri Giriraj Singh and Lord Tariq Ahmad, Minister of State for South Asia and the Commonwealth in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, jointly launched the Climate Resilience Information System and Planning (CRISP-M) tool for integrating climate information in Geographic Information System (GIS) based watershed planning under the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA.

Shri Giriraj Singh, speaking at the ceremony, said that the CRISP-M tool will assist embed climatic information in Mahatma Gandhi NREGS GIS-based planning and implementation. He also praised the British government’s efforts, as well as those of other stakeholders who helped the Rural Development Ministry establish the tool, and hoped that the introduction of CRISP-M will provide new opportunities for our rural communities to address climate change challenges. This technology will be used in seven states where the UK government’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and India’s Ministry of Rural Development are collaborating on climate resilience.

Lord Tariq Ahmad, Minister of State for South Asia and the Commonwealth in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, praised India’s commitment to promoting climate initiatives through the Mahatma Gandhi NREGS programme during the joint introduction of the CRISP-M tool. “Reaching right throughout India, the scheme is having a wonderful, life-changing impact,” Lord Tariq said in his speech. It assists poor and vulnerable people in adapting to climate change and protecting them from natural disasters. CRISP-M, the outstanding new tool we’re celebrating today, is the latest example of this fantastic effort.” In many Mahatma Gandhi NREGA impact studies across India, Shri N. N. Sinha, Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, stated that the impact of grassroot planning, implementation, and utilisation is visible in terms of enhanced groundwater recharge, increased forest coverage, and increased land productivity.
