Save the planet, adopt sustainable lifestyle: Venkaiah Naidu

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has urged people to become environmentally conscious and adopt sustainable lifestyles in times of climate change. Speaking at two different functions in November, the VP called for a critical reassessment of our lifestyle and thinking in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic to establish peace and harmony in the world. He expressed the hope that the world adopts ways to make the post-COVID world a better place for humanity—a world where competition gives way to compassion, wealth makes way for health, consumerism gives way to spirituality, and supremacy and dominance yield to peaceful co-existence.

Inaugurating the 6th Dharma Dhamma International Conference on Dharma Dhamma Traditions in Building the Post-COVID World Order at Nalanda, Bihar, Vice President Naidu cautioned about the dangerous consequences of climate change and the immediate need to shift to a sustainable lifestyle. He appealed to the people to learn from traditional, nature-friendly practices and lauded Nalanda University for seeking to build the world’s largest self-sustaining net-zero campus.

On his recent visit to the Forest Research Centre for Coastal Ecosystem (FRCCE) in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the Vice President of India inaugurated the institute’s Marine Interpretation Unit developed to distribute knowledge on the marine environment and work with coastal communities. In a Facebook post, M Venkaiah Naidu later applauded FRCCE’s research on forest biodiversity and forest genetic resources management on mangroves and coastal ecosystems of the East and West coast. The centre is the lone establishment in India for research on timber protection under seawater. It has distributed 100 preservative-treated catamarans made of perishable timber to the fishermen of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as a measure towards alleviating poverty.
