SDG Ranking: India Slips to Spot 120, Lags Behind Bhutan, Bangladesh

India's rank has dropped due to challenges faced in meeting 11 SDGs, including zero hunger, good health and wellbeing, gender equality, and sustainable cities and communities.

India fell three places to rank 120 on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the 2030 agenda by 192 United Nations’ member states adopted in 2015, finds the India Environment Report 2022 released by Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav on Tuesday.

The latest ranking puts India behind all its neighbours except Pakistan, which is ranked 129. Bhutan is ranked 75th, Sri Lanka 87th, Nepal 96th and Bangladesh 109th in this list.

India’s overall SGD score is 66 out of 100. The main reasons for the country’s downgrade are due to in 11 SDGs, including zero hunger, good health and well-being, gender equality and sustainable cities and communities. The country has also performed poorly in terms of quality education and better life, says the report.

Last year, India fell short of its goals of ending hunger, food security, gender equality, resilient infrastructure, inclusive and sustainable industrialisation.

According to the report, Jharkhand and Bihar are the states least prepared to achieve the SDGs by 2030. Kerala is at the top, followed by Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu at second spot. In third place are Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Chandigarh ranks first among the Union Territories in achieving the goals. Delhi, Lakshadweep and Pondicherry are in second place, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands is in third place.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by the UN Member States in 2015 to establish peace and prosperity in the world. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals have been established to achieve this status through global partnerships.
