Coal India Limited on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sports Ministry, contributing Rs 75 crore towards the government’s National Sports Development Fund as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.

The MoU was signed in the presence of the Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports Anurag Singh Thakur in New Delhi with Minister of State for Sports Nitish Pramanik and Sports Secretary Ravi Mittal in attendance.

Mr Thakur said that the contribution by Coal India had come at an appropriate time in the backdrop of unprecedented performance by the nation’s sportspersons at the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.  He also congratulated the athletes for their best-ever performance at the Paralympics, where they won an unprecedented 19 medals.

Appreciating Coal India’s initiative, the Minister added that with this a part of the funds generated from the mining of coal will go to “chisel our sportspersons into ‘diamonds’ that deliver a podium finish”.

“The sports academies under SAI and LNIPE needed more hostels for the benefit of athletes. Coal India Ltd’s endeavour to contribute Rs.75 crore towards construction of three hostels for athletes will bring ease of training and enhanced facilities,” Mr Thakur said.

The Minister felt the MoU for construction of hostels at the Sports Authority of India academies at Bangalore, Bhopal and LNIPE Gwalior would strengthen bonds between the Department of Sports/NSDF and Coal India and suggested the two bodies jointly set up an academy to further sporting culture in the country.

Thakur also appealed to all PSUs, corporates and individuals to come forward and contribute generously to the NSDF as part of their corporate social responsibility and become stakeholders in India’s journey to becoming a sporting powerhouse.
