The Ministry of Home Affairs told parliament on July 19 that there were 674,021 cyber security incidents in the year to June 2022.
Minister of State in Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra said in response to a question from the Lok Sabha that 394,499 such incidents occurred in 2019, 1,158,208 in 2020 and 1,402,809 in 2021.
The growing number of cybersecurity incidents is of particular concern as the country still lacks a national cybersecurity strategy or data protection regulations.
Regarding the measures taken to counter cyberattacks, the government said it is conducting an automated cyber threat exchange to collect, analyze and share alerts with organizations across all sectors to mitigate threats.
Apart from that, Mishra also said that the minister of state for home said the government has issued guidelines for Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) regarding their key roles and responsibilities for securing applications and infrastructure and compliance.
He said that all government websites and apps are audited for cybersecurity before hosting, and regular audits of websites and apps are done after hosting.
He further added that the government has recruited 97 security audit firms to monitor and help implement best practices in information security.
