Railways revenue rises to ₹33,476 crore during the first half of the current fiscal

The total approximate revenue of Indian Railways on originating basis during April 1 to October 8, 2022 is ₹33,476 crore, registering an increase of 92% in comparison to ₹17,394 crore achieved during the same period last year. Railway revenue had fallen sharply in the past two years due to the pandemic.   

In reserved passenger segment, the total approximate numbers of passengers booked during this period was 42.89 crore as compared to 34.56 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 24%. The revenue generated from reserved passenger segment during was ₹26,961 crores as compared to ₹16,307 crores during the same period last year, showing an increase of 65%.

In unreserved passenger segment, the total approximate numbers of passengers booked during the first half of the current fiscal was ₹268.56 crore as compared to ₹90.57 crore during the corresponding period last year, showing an increase of 197%. The revenue generated from unreserved passenger segment during the period was ₹6,515 Crores as compared to ₹1,086 crore during the same period last year, representing an increase of 500%.

The rebound in revenue and passenger traffic comes after a two-year period of low travel due to the pandemic. With the pandemic fading, it is expected this trend will hold true for rest of the year with expected spikes in railway revenue during the festivals and winter holidays.
