The Indian Institute of Technology Madras is partnering with Power Grid Corporation of India to launch a scholarship programme for financially weaker B. Tech students. The company is contributing ₹10.5 crore to set up a scholarship fund as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. This fund will help eligible IIT Madras students to cover their tuition fees through merit-based and proven scholarships. This is the highest single contribution for CSR scholarship for IIT Madras in 2021-22 FY.

Professor V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said on the occasion, “IIT Madras’ motto is to be an ‘Institute for all’. Initiatives like the B.Sc. degree programme and scholarships for deserving students have made IIT Madras more accessible for everyone. The institute records its sincere thanks to Power Grid. IIT Madras is also planning to expand such scholarships to all technical institutions across the country.”

“Through this initiative, IIT Madras, as an inclusive institution, is glad to enable students — especially girl students, who need financial support the most,” said Prof Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras.

Power Grid Endowment Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships on a merit-based co-financing basis to B.Tech students from economically weaker sections. Every year, many deserving students from economically weaker sections study at IIT Madras.

Power Grid Endowment Scholarship will help these bright young students to get their education without financial restrictions. Aimed at encouraging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) women, the scholarship programme will have a special focus on economically disadvantaged female students. This programme helps to expand IIT Madras’ policy of being an inclusive institution for students of all economic sections.

V. K. Singh, Director (Personnel), Power Grid Corporation of India, in his speech during the event, spoke about how students “need financial assistance” now more than ever, adding that the scholarship demonstrated the PSU’s commitment to education.

“POWERGRID believes that scholarships can be one of the most direct ways to give back to the community. Due to increasing educational costs, students need financial assistance more than ever. Our scholarship scheme demonstrates POWERGRID’s commitment to education and to the future of upcoming generations. I believe that this scholarship will make a real, significant impact on the lives of the benefitted students,” Singh said.
