Amid increasing urgency to combat climate change, brands around the world have begun reevaluating their production practices. Beauty brand L’Oréal India on Thursday announced that its manufacturing facility in Baddi in Himachal Pradesh has reached 100% carbon neutrality.

“The Baddi plant has replaced conventional boilers with electric boilers to reduce diesel consumption to zero and has changed the source of electricity to a hydropower plant to reach 100% neutrality. By improving energy efficiency and using 100% renewable energy, L’Oréal India aims to reduce its CO2 emissions and operate within planetary boundaries,” the company said in a statement.

Amit Jain, managing director, of L’Oréal India, said the plant’s 100% carbon neutrality milestone is aligned with the group’s global sustainability targets. “We are happy to report that the emissions associated with electricity and fuel consumption have been reduced to zero, thereby having no carbon impact on the environment,” Jain said.

L’Oreal India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of French cosmetics maker L’Oreal SA, has a second manufacturing plant at Chakan near Pune, besides having research and innovation facilities in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Since 2005, L’Oréal has been advancing its renewable energy ambition through a multi-pronged approach aimed at improving energy efficiency and transitioning to 100% renewable energy.

In April 2021, the company pledged to use 100 per cent recycled plastic, 100 per cent sustainable cardboard and operate100 per cent carbon neutral factories by 2030. Along with financial support, it will also develop specific programs that empower women in leadership positions.

In September 2021, L’Oréal USA announced that it has reached carbon neutrality for scopes 1 and 2 emissions for all 25 US sites across 12 states, including its manufacturing and distribution facilities, administrative locations and research and innovation sites.
