US Announces $122M Fund For India to Fight Infectious Diseases

The United States has announced $122 million in funding to help India’s top three medical research institutes prevent preventable outbreaks, identify disease threats, and respond quickly and effectively.

A total of $122,475,000 will be disbursed over five years to three of India’s top health research institutes: the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the National Institute of Virology (NIV) and the National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE).

According to a press release, The fund is allocated for the institute to identify and control the prevalence of zoonotic diseases through the “one health” approach, Evaluation of vaccine safety monitoring systems; Increase the capacity of public health workers in field epidemiology and outbreak response, And address antimicrobial resistance.

Eligibility for funding beginning September 30, 2022, is limited to ICMR, and ICMR institutions, including the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune and the National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), Chennai.

ICMR is the main regulatory body for a number of national-level institutions that are centers and standards of excellence in specific scientific fields in India, such as the National Institute of Virology, the National Institute of Epidemiology and many more.

These organizations are required by the Ministry of Health of Family Health and Welfare (MoHFW) to periodically monitor laboratory confirmation of priority pathogens in India as well as to collect and analyze surveillance data for public health work and to work closely together.
