“The war in Ukraine continues to turn people’s lives upside down, sowing chaos and destruction. The horrors it brings to the civilian population will leave deep scars for many generations,” said Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

She stressed that the consequences of the war are felt by the inhabitants of the region and the entire planet, and “there is no end in sight yet.” Together with other factors, it has exacerbated the situation of millions of people. Thus, 1.2 billion people live in countries that have been significantly affected by the three-dimensional financial, food and energy crisis.

This year alone, according to UN forecasts, the number of those who face food shortages will grow from 276 to 323 million people. Against this background, there is a further stratification of society – growing inequality, both between countries and within them.

Michelle Bachelet called on the international community to intensify efforts to implement the Paris Climate Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals within eight years, which remain until the deadline set in these documents – 2030.

In this context, she stressed the need to pay particular attention to combating inequality and discrimination; include human rights measures in national budgets; strengthen international cooperation, including in matters of financial and other support for less wealthy countries; and expand space for civil society.
