Ruchira Kamboj Appointed as India’s Permanent Representative to the UN

India’s Ambassador to Bhutan, Ruchira Kamboj, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from Batch 1987, was appointed as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York on June 21.

Kamboj will succeed TS Tirumurti as the Indian ambassador to the UN.

“Ms. Ruchira Kamboj (IFS: 1987), presently Ambassador of India to Bhutan, has been appointed as the next Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations at New York. She is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement today.

Ruchira Kamboj was the All India women’s topper of the 1987 Civil Services batch and the topper of the 1987 Foreign Service batch.

She began her diplomatic career in Paris, where she served as Third Secretary at the Embassy of India in France from 1989 to 1991, where she learned the French language.

During her career, she has been Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO in Paris, Indian High Commissioner in South Africa, and Chief of Protocol in New Delhi.

Ruchira Kamboj is the first female Ambassador of India to Bhutan. From 2011 to 2014, she served as India’s Chief of Protocol. She is the first and only female diplomat in the Government of India to hold this position.
