The Cultural Icon of India and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, Padma Vibhushan Dr. Sonal Mansingh through her academy Centre for Indian Classical Dances (CICD), also known as Shri Kamakhya Kalapeeth, will be holding mega-event ‘Dance of India @75’, a virtual dance competition to mark the auspicious day of Guru Purnima on July, 24th 2021.

The four-day mega event will be held in eight (8) styles of India’s rich tradition of classical dances viz. Odissi. Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Manipuri, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Sattriya and Kathakali. Entries to the virtual dance competition have been invited on three themes; namely Atmanibhar Bharat, Vishwa Guru Bharat and Unsung Heroes of India and under solo and group categories. Under each category, prizes would be given for the first, second and third positions and also for the five special entries.

The prime objective of the Centre for Indian Classical Dances (CICD) behind holding the event is that the performing arts have been the worst sufferer in the age of pandemics. Performing artists, especially from the traditional dances of India have been the worst hit by the closure of auditoria, recording studio, cancellation of all events and festivals which are the main sources of sustenance through the year.

CICD feels that the young generation of dancers deserve good platforms where they can share their ideas and creativity without fear of incurring huge expenditures. It is also very important to explore new avenues for performances that give stable livelihood to the artist, but at the same time, it is also important to retain the originality and classical nature of the art forms especially the dances.

The Centre has been working in the field of teaching India’s classical dance art, classical music, Yoga and Sanskrit since 1977. It has an enviable record of mega-events, dance-drama, the performance of dance, music and theatre by some of the greatest artists of India. The Centre encouraged young dancers of the time i.e. 1983-84 in specially designed festivals, most of whom are eminent names today e.g. Leela Samson, Bharati Shivaji, Saswati Sen, Krishan Mohan and others. The Centre organises the Kalayatra festival every year and gives the prestigious Life-Time Achievement Award to legendary artists in the field of Art and Culture.
