From July 1, Gurugram will ban the manufacturing, importing, stocking, distribution and sale of single-use plastic. The violation of the rule will attract a maximum fine of ₹25,000, said officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) on Sunday.

Seven teams, each with five officials, have been set up to monitor and enforce penalties for single-use plastic violations, a senior official said. Two MCG executive engineers have been appointed as nodal officers of these teams to supervise the operations.

In February, the Haryana urban local bodies (ULB) issued an order to all municipal corporations across the state to take action against plastic use within their respective jurisdictions.

The MCG issued a public order on Saturday warning residents, shopkeepers, manufacturers and exporters that single-use plastic will soon be banned across the city. The civic body officials also listed items that will come under its purview.

Plastic items that are disposable or used only once or for a short period are termed single-use plastic items.

“The MCG will take action against any person or establishment found to be using single-use plastic items from July 1. The notice has been issued in the public domain in this regard and continuous awareness programmes and workshops will be conducted over the next seven weeks to apprise residents, shopkeepers and manufacturers about the July 1 deadline,” said Vijaypal Yadav, joint commissioner, MCG.

The joint commissioner informed, that the MCG conducted a two-day workshop with owners and representatives of large-scale hotels, restaurants, banquet halls, Dhabhas and motels, which generate at least 50 kg of waste daily, at the community centre in Sector 27. The MCG officials informed the attendees of the meeting about the upcoming public notice banning single-use plastic.

Kuldeep Singh, Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) brand ambassador in the MCG, said, over the past two years, the civic body has opened seven cloth bag banks and seven steel utensils banks in Gurugram to help end the use of single-use plastic.
