NEW DELHI : In order to ensure speedy claim settlement for the health workers fighting Coronavirus, the government has decided to streamline and simplify the process, so that settlement is done within 48 hours. The states and other stakeholders had been raising the matter of insurance extended under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP) Insurance Scheme getting delayed. In order to cut down on these delays, scrutiny will be done at the level of district collectors, who will then certify each case in accordance with the SoP of the scheme. On the basis of this certificate, the insurance company will approve and settle the claims within a period of 48 hours. The district collector will also be empowered to certify the claims in case of central government hospitals, AIIMS, Railways etc.

The PMGKP Insurance Scheme was first launched on March 30, 2020, for a period of 90 days to provide comprehensive personal accident cover of Rs. 50 lakhs to all healthcare providers, including community health workers and private health workers drafted by the government for the care of Covid-19 patients and for those who may have come in direct contact of Covid-19 patients and were at risk of being impacted by it. The centre then extended the scheme for one year starting from April 24, 2021. The scheme is being implemented through New India Assurance Company (NIACL).
