September 9, 2021

Phase 2 of the Swachh Bharat Mission was launched by the Ministry of Jal Shakti as Swachh Survekshan Grameen, 2021 on Thursday.

As part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, Swachh Survekshan Grameen aims to support the acceleration of open defecation free-plus interventions and results across India.

An agency has been hired to conduct the Survekshan 2021. As part of the survey, villages, districts and states would be ranked using key parameters.

In the Swachh Survekshan Grameen, 17,475 villages in 698 districts across the country will be covered, and 87,250 public places including schools, Anganwadis, public health centres, haat/bazaars/religious places in these villages visited for the survey.

According to the Ministry, around 1,74,750 households will be interviewed for their feedback on Swachh Bharat Mission related issues. Citizens will also be mobilised to provide feedback on sanitation-related issues online using an application developed for the purpose. A detailed protocol was also shared to guide the ranking of districts based on their performance on key quality and quantitative parameters.

Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in cities and towns across India. It was launched as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which aimed to make India clean and free of open defecation by 2nd October 2019. The first survey was undertaken in 2016 and covered 73 cities; by 2020 the survey had grown to cover 4,242 cities, said to be the largest cleanliness survey in the world.

The objective of the survey is to encourage large scale citizen participation, ensure the sustainability of initiatives taken towards garbage-free and open defecation free cities, provide credible outcomes validated by third party certification, institutionalize existing systems through online processes and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities more habitable and sustainable.
