Mass Destruction Arsenal Are Suicide, Not Self Defence: UN

Mass Destruction Arsenal

UN Secretary-General António Guterres took over a high level UN meeting on Monday with sweeping remarks on arsenal that are created for mass destruction. While nations across the world may classify the creation and manufacture of such weaponry as self defence, the Secretary General called them nothing short of suicide, in the long run. Mass destruction arsenal are not to be taken as a must have, warned the UN leader on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

While the recent events of the UN have focused on inclusion and other climate change goals, there has also been a movement towards cutting down on and completely eliminating mass destruction arsenal that is held safely by nations around the world. This is due to the fact that it has been widely recognised that the nations holding these weapons should instead adopt an approach where they refuse to match step with those who begin the research and development of such arsenal. This would make for a more cohesive global society steeped in a peace promoting perspective.

The mass destruction arsenals do not merely come with a high risk factor, but they also threaten to do away with sustainable development of the places where they are manufactured. This would lead to fractured communities that live in fear and habitats that have to compromise on the quality of the climate and the natural resources that they are accorded. As per the UN Secretary General, this is nothing short of suicide and must be combatted by raising more and more youth voices. He urged nations to indulge in “cold logic” rather than “perilous competition” that can take away from the potential of the future generations who will merely be left at risk as they act as the custodians of such harmful inventory.
