From a dilapidated centuries-old building to the cramped and crowded hallway, all clinics and patient services of Lady Hardinge Medical College will soon move into two seven-story buildings, which were unveiled by the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandavia on Monday. With the new OPD and IPD blocks, all patient services – counselling, diagnosis and pharmacy – will be available in one place.

The new block of the IPD will have more than 800 beds, which will be opened gradually and will have more than 20 operating rooms, which will mean a great boost to hospital infrastructure. The CT facility on the ground floor of the new OPD block opened last month, the rest of the services will be removed soon.

The new buildings have wide corridors, entrances and large waiting rooms in front of all the clinics to ensure that patients do not have to wait in line. Currently, the hospital waiting room has temporary sheds and ceiling fans, which makes it very hot. The new buildings, on the other hand, have central air conditioning.

The two hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine – Mrs. Sucheta Kriplani and Kalabati Saran – receive around 3,000 to 4,000 patients daily in outpatient clinics.

After more than 11 years of waiting, the project has kept the hospital updated, with token vending machines and LCD screens to bring in patients whose drugs are being distributed.
