The Khadi and Village Industries Commission has paved the way for the sustainable self-employment of nine women in Goa who lost their loved ones in the Covid-19 pandemic. The women were provided financial assistance to establish their own manufacturing units under the KVIC’s flagship programme, the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP). This is the first time that a government agency has provided livelihood support for vulnerable groups affected by the pandemic.

KVIC chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena distributed cheques worth Rs 1.48 crore to the women on Monday to help them open their own manufacturing units, automotive repair shops, bakery and cake shops, beauty parlours, herbal and ayurvedic medicines and cashew processing units.

According to the PMEGP programme, each beneficiary was provided loans up to Rs 25 lakh from the Central Bank of India. In addition, each of these new units will create employment opportunities for at least eight people.

The KVIC chairman said such self-employment programmes would not only provide financial support for affected families but also create employment opportunities for others. During the Covid pandemic, KVIC had promoted local manufacturing and self-employment to sustain families in distress, he pointed out.  As a result, these new entrepreneurs could not only support themselves financially but also support many other families by hiring them in new manufacturing units.
