Indian Railways launches skill development training programme

The Railway Ministry last week launched a skill development programme to train youths across the country with a focus on the jobs for the Indian Railways. Under the Rail Kaushal Vikar Yojana, the Railways aims to train at least 50,000 youths over the next three years.

“Initially, training will be provided to 1,000 candidates in four trades, Electrician, Welder, Machinist and Fitter and will comprise of initial basic training of 100 hours. Training programmes in other trades will be added by zonal railways and production units based on regional demands and needs assessment,” a statement said.

“Training shall be provided free of cost and participants will be selected from applications received online, following a transparent mechanism on the basis of marks in matriculation. Candidates who are 10th passed and between 18 an 35 years shall be eligible. Participants in the scheme shall however have no claim to seek employment in Railways on the basis of this training,” the statement added.

“The aim of this initiative is to impart training skills to the youth in various trades to bring qualitative improvement,” said Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He also stressed that training in remote areas would be conducted under this programme.

The Indian Railways will bear all the cost of the training and it will be free for the candidates. All eligible candidates will have to submit their applications online. The participants of the scheme cannot claim to seek employment in the Railways on the basis of this training.
