The government has spent ₹20,767 crore to build 3,595 km of all-weather roads along India’s borders over the past five years, informed Minister of State for Defence, Ajay Bhatt in the written response in the Parliament.

With China actively building border infrastructure over the past decade, India has to rapidly invest in developing a robust network of roads to meet the security challenges. Moreover, since the summer of 2020, China has adopted an increasingly aggressive posture on India’s borders in Eastern Ladakh.

According to the data tabled in the parliament, the India-China border areas witnessed the maximum road-building activity. Over the past five years, India has built 2,088.57 km of roads along the Sino-India borders in Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and eastern borders in Arunachal Pradesh at a cost of ₹15,477 crore. The development of road infrastructure along India’s border with China reflects the new strategic imperative.

India also built 1,336.09 km of roads along the border it shares with Pakistan at a cost of ₹4,242.38 crore. Though, the borders with the western neighbours have been relatively quiet over the past few years, building roads in the area serves both strategic and development imperatives.

Further, India also developed roads for 151.15 km along the Indo-Myanmar border at a cost of ₹882.52 crore, while another 19.25 km of new roads were built along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

All border roads are developed by the Border Roads Organisation of the Indian Army.
