Deep Depression Intensifies Into Cyclone Over Tamil Nadu Coast, Fishermen Warned

The deep depression over south-east and adjoining south-west Bay of Bengal moved west-north-westwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at over south-west and adjoining south-east Bay of Bengal, near latitude 8.7°N and longitude 85.7°E, about 500 km east of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), about 630 km east-southeast of Jaffna (Sri Lanka), about 690 km east-southeast of Karaikal and about 770 km east- southeast of Chennai. The Indian Meteorological department has issued a warning to the coastal fishermen not to venture into the sea over the next 48 to 72 hours.

It is very likely to move west-north-westwards and intensify further gradually into a cyclonic storm around  December 7 evening and reach south-west Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by December 8 morning. It will continue to move west-north-westwards towards north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during subsequent 48 hours.

Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places very likely over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal and isolated heavy rainfall over adjoining areas of south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on December 8. North coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over north interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining Rayalaseema on December 9.

Squally wind with speeds reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70-90 kmph is likely to prevail over south-east and south-weat Bay of Bengal over the next 48 hours. The IMD has also warned fishermen in the coastal areas not to venture out into the sea as long as cyclonic conditions prevail.
