The launch of the e-Shram portal is an important step in ensuring universalisation of social security in India, said Union Minister for Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav. The portal captures the data of unorganised sector workers for evidence-based policymaking and provides social security to unorganised sector workers.

The minister was speaking at a Tripartite National Dialogue on Global Call to Action for a human-centred recovery from the Covid-19 crisis in the context of India, organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Human Rights Day (10 December 2021). The objective of the tripartite conference was to discuss the four priority areas of the Global Call to Action: inclusive economic growth and employment, protection of all workers, universal social protection, and social dialogue, in the context of India. The conference was envisaged to foster convergence and tripartite action contributing to the implementation of the ILO Centenary Declaration for the Future of Work and Sustainable Development Goals in India.

Union Minister for Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav highlighted the need for capacity building, skill development, occupational safety of the workers and transition towards green jobs and green economy for inclusive, resilient and sustainable development of the country. He informed that the Labour Bureau of the ministry is undertaking all-India surveys on migrant workers, domestic workers, transport sector workers, and others, to help in developing policies for the welfare of these workers. He called for collective efforts of Government and social partners and constructive tripartite social dialogue to build back better.

The conference had two-panel discussions. Dignitaries from the government and other stakeholders present at the conference included Sunil Barthwal, Secretary, MoLE, Vinita Singhal, Principal Secretary, Government of Maharashtra, Prof. Pravin Kumar Sinha, Senior Expert, Arun Chawla, Director General, FICCI and Executive Director, AIOE (Employers’ representative) and Manali Shah, National Secretary, SEWA (workers’ representative).
